Our nondenominational funeral home provides comfort to all with the Florida hospitality that you expect and deserve.

Accommodating spaces

From the moment you step into Blount & Curry Funeral Home – MacDill Avenue, you are immediately met with an abundance of uniquely updated event spaces designed to provide the most personalized celebration of life possible. Our funeral home offers a number of flexible options for both intimate and larger gatherings, and recently completed an extensive renovation to include three distinctive event spaces: Ybor 1929, Palma Ceia Hall and Third Venue.

Ybor 1929

Ybor 1929 aka Themed as a speakeasy reminiscent of underground nightlife during the Prohibition era, Ybor 1929 is a nod to Tampa’s distinctive heritage and history of Ybor City, once known as the “Cigar Capital of the World.” During Prohibition days in the 1920s, Ybor was a community comprised almost entirely of Italian, Spanish and Cuban immigrants and became known for supplying liquor and cigars throughout the United States.

Our Ybor 1929 event space takes you back in time with ornate gold and green wallpaper, warm lighting, exposed brick, built-in lush banquets, a light-up bar and large portraits of flappers and other characters from the ‘20s. Perfect for fully catered events or bar service only, Ybor 1929 is a special space for celebrations of life.

But bookings won't stop there. In an article about the space, Tampa Bay Times called Ybor 1929 "swanky"—not something you often read about a funeral home venue—and suggested that it’s right for all sorts of events. Funeral director and location manager Bridgette Soto explained to the paper: "The biggest comment we’ve had from everyone who’s seen the room is ‘I want to have a party in here, I want a meeting in here, I want to have a retirement party here. It’s like they see this space is more flexible. And we are open to that. ... It’s not limited to simply funerals and memorial services."

Palma Ceia Hall

Palma Ceia Hall at Blount & Curry Funeral Home-MacDill ChapelThe largest event space at Blount & Curry Funeral Home – MacDill Avenue, Palma Ceia Hall features an upscale hotel or country club atmosphere. With environmental projection available, this space allows for an immersive experience through visuals, arts and media that can be custom created to highlight the passions, interests and hobbies of a loved one.

The Bayshore Room

The Bayshore Room at Blount & Curry Funeral Home-MacDill ChapelThe third of our recently renovated spaces, The Bayshore room is available for more intimate gatherings. With upscale décor and flexible seating, The Bayshore room is fully customizable to your needs and wishes and ideal for encouraging conversation, sharing memories and incorporating unique details into a one-of-a-kind, memorable event.

History

When Blount Henderson Funeral Home first opened its doors in 1913, Tampa was a small city on the rise. When Frazier T. Blount purchased an interest in the funeral home 4 years later, the F.T. Blount Company Funeral Home represented a change in name and ownership.

In that era, funeral homes usually operated out of small converted residences. In search of larger quarters, Mr. Blount purchased 2 homes on the northeast corner of Tyler and Marion Streets. One structure was converted to a funeral home and the other became his family residence. An enclosed passageway connected the 2 facilities, creating Tampa's 1st funeral home staffed on a 24-hour basis.

Growth and expansion

In 1952, Mr. Blount retired and sold his business to 2 key employees, Henry Hale and Jack Yent Sr. Three years later, Hale and Yent built Tampa's first conventional funeral home on Nebraska Avenue. That building now houses the administrative offices and training center for our new employees, as well as continuing education classrooms for all personnel.

Over the years, numerous funeral homes from Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties joined the F.T. Blount family, including Curry & Son Funeral Home, founded by Mark Curry Jr. In late 2006, Terrace Oaks Chapel was added to serve families of Temple Terrace and the Tampa area. Today, 5 chapels serve clients as members of the Blount & Curry family.
